Nutrition Impact Summit Recap:

The Nutrition Impact Summit, an invitation-only meeting, took place from Sept. 21-23, 2016, in Dallas, Texas, as part of the Second Century planning. The Summit supported the three-year planning process by building collaboration across food, wellness and health care systems.

At the Summit, 170 thought leaders, innovators and practitioners explored and discovered opportunities to accelerate progress toward good health and well-being for all people. A focus was on increasing collaboration among key stakeholders and identifying opportunities to improve the global health trajectory.

Guided by the Appreciative Inquiry process and member feedback from the August all-member survey, participants started to identify innovative solutions to today’s unique public health challenges and opportunities for partners to collaborate and stimulate improvements in national and global health through food and nutrition.

Small-group brainstorming based on the opportunity areas presented in the August all-member survey and the Nutrition Impact Summit briefing paper (which will be published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and made available to all members in early 2017) led to hundreds of ideas that were turned into prototype ideas and draft innovation projects. Action plans were developed to advance the projects, and post-Summit team calls are underway to keep the projects moving.

As part of the Summit process, the group explored strategic partnerships among organizations at the Summit, along with additional key stakeholders that were not able to attend, that will be instrumental in continuing to build out these innovation projects and put the new vision into action.

Additionally, the Summit leveraged the power of the system in the room to shape the first draft of the new Second Century vision, which is presented as an illustration (attached). We encourage all members to share their thoughts on the vision by taking a short, one-question survey. In February, the Academy and Foundation Boards of Directors will review the new vision and innovation project proposals, determining which proposals to endorse as part of our Second Century.

FNCE Town Hall Overview
Please feel free to use this verbiage in your group’s newsletter or on the electronic mailing list!

During FNCE® 2016 in Boston, attendees had the opportunity to attend one of two identical Second Century Town Halls to learn more about the Second Century planning process, hear updates from The Nutrition Impact Summit, provide their thoughts on the draft vision and ask questions. President Lucille Beseler and President-elect Donna Martin each led a Town Hall with Foundation Chair Jean Ragalie-Carr and a small panel of members who participated in the Summit.

Key points from the Town Hall:

  • Our Second Century planning process is a collaborative, creative and deliberate three-year initiative:
    • 2016: Vision year
    • 2017: Mission year
    • 2018: Impact year
  • An overview of The Nutrition Impact Summit, along with the illustration of the draft vision (attached), was shared in addition to a member panel speaking about their experience at the Summit, sharing excitement surrounding the Second Century and what project initiatives they are working on.
  • Member input is crucial to this process and the Academy looks to every area of the organization and profession to hear thoughts on the future. As a reminder, member feedback has been incorporated throughout the process, including:
    • Over 125 interviews conducted with members and individuals involved with food, nutrition and health.
    • Numerous presentations, discussions and Q&A sessions with the House of Delegates, Council on Future Practice, ACEND, CDR and several Academy committees, councils and groups.
    • The August all-member survey, which resulted in over 1,700 members weighing in on the draft Opportunity Areas.
  • Ways for members to continue contributing to the planning process include:
    • Sharing your thoughts with the Second Century liaisons in your affiliates, DPGs and MIGs.
    • Reaching out to your delegate in the House of Delegates to voice your perspective.
    • Emailing with your questions and comments.
    • Providing input on the draft vision via a short survey that is open through Friday, Nov. 18.
  • The Foundation has launched a campaign to fund our Second Century. Members can join the Second Century Giving Society by donating here.

Attendees, as well as members, are encouraged to spread the word about the Academy’s Second Century on social media using #oursecondcentury.
