The Scientific Basis for the FDA-EPA Joint Advice About Eating Fish

– William R. Jones, PhD., Deputy Director (FDA/CFSAN/Office of Food Safety)
– Lisa Larimer, P.E., Team Leader (EPA/Office of Water/Office of Science and Technology)

It’s no surprise that a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analysis of fish consumption data found that 50 percent of pregnant women surveyed ate fewer than 2 ounces a week, far less than the amount recommended. As we know, fish is a fantastic source of DHA and EPA fatty acids, protein, and other nutrients that are critical for fetal growth and development. However, many women can be concerned about eating fish  due to mercury content or other contaminant advisories, but, fish in the “best choices” category make up nearly 90 percent of fish eaten in the United States. FDA and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) worked together to issue specific advice for women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding and are implementing a new consumer education campaign featuring the next advice.

In this webinar, hear from Dr. Bill Jones, Deputy Director of the Office of Food Safety at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at FDA, and Lisa Larimer, leader of the fish advisory, fish tissue contamination and beach advisory programs at EPA, about the scientific basis for how FDA and EPA formulated their recommendation and what factors were considered. Their presentation will help you stay smart on fish safety and contamination issues, as well as the relevant nutrition factors for pregnant women.

We anticipate that this webinar will be approved for 1 hour CPEU. WH members who participate in the webinar will have access to the webinar handout and CPEU certificate in the members only section of the WH Website,
